Boulevard BBQ

Bourbon Barrel Quad is a limited release from Boulevard’s Smokestack Series. A quadrupel is a strong dark Belgian style ale that is known for it’s rich malty sweetness and subtle spice, and Boulevard Brewing enhances these flavors by aging their quad in bourbon barrels with sour cherries.

The color is a rich, reddish brown with a thin beige head that leaves a little lacing as it settles. The smell is sweet and tart, mostly sour cherries, with little bourbon or malt showing through. The taste is fantastic, a perfectly balanced blend of malt, brown sugar, bourbon, sour cherries, wood, and spice box. Very nice, and unusually sour, not something I expected from a quad. Almost like dark American sour ale, but more balanced. We paired it with chili, with the spices in the food and beer complementing each other. Other pairings: smoked meat, game, barbecue, buttery cheeses.
